EPILOGUE

Captain Dave turned out to be the hero of my youth but in ways I had not imagined. It has been exciting discovering aspects him. But as I eluded to in the preface, there is still much that I don’t know. There is more information to be gleaned from the National Archives in Washington, DC. There are maritime records in the library in Key West that may offer clues. Somewhere I hope to discover the story of his immigration. I did not have the space to write in detail about his wife and children. There is more information to be written about his work with the Lighthouse Service. But for now I have met a man who was hard-working, dedicated to his profession and his family, and respected by his family and neighbors. These are the same qualities passed to his grandson, his namesake, my father, David John Ellis. May the tradition continue in my son, who is named David in honor of his heritage.
